If crystals had superpowers (and in all honesty, they do), prehnite would have that eerie amazing ability to read people. This green crystal has been enabling humans to understand, for centuries, who is worthwhile. We can all use a little help on this.

You know what I mean, when you meet someone and something doesn't feel right, you just can't put your finger on it? Or sometimes you just vibe immediately with a total stranger? That's your gut coming into play for you. Prehnite is your intuition's personal trainer, showing those things how to strengthen and become clearer.

What Makes Prehnite So Pretty

Before we get all woo-woo about this, let's consider the science. Prehnite is calcium aluminum silicate hydroxide (you can pick which name you like), and it is actually very interesting in a historical sense, too. It was discovered by Colonel Hendrik von Prehn in South Africa in 1788, making it the first mineral named after a person. I'm sure the guy probably had no idea he was putting his name on what is probably the world's friendship detector crystal.

Prehnite forms in the cavities found in volcanic rocks which is a little poetic. Something so calming, coming from actual fire and chaos? That fits perfectly with a crystal whose purpose is helping you find peace amongst relationship drama.

The green color ranges from a pale apple green to deeper apple green, and some pieces even have a cat's eye effect called chatoyancy, where you can see light move under the surface. That feels very apt for a stone that's intended to help you see what's really happening with a person! Prehnite is roughly a 6 - 6.5 on the Mohs hardness scale. In other words, it has a hardness less than quartz, but it's still hardy enough to be used in jewelry. And that translucent quality? The color created in prehnite is due to the way that crystals make over thousands of years. Patience creates beauty.

Why We Need This More Than Ever

Let's be honest, there isn't a ton of literature out there about prehnite compared to rose quartz or amethyst. And I can see why. It's more of an behind-the-scenes player, doing it's business while the flashy crystals take all the attention.

The truth is we regard friendship situations in different terms than our (great?) grandparents had to think about. They knew, maybe 50 people in their lifetime, and most of them were probably family. Meanwhile we are navigating hundreds of social media connections and friends, dating app matches, colleagues or coworkers. Sorting out who we might want to have coffee with, who is simply collecting followers, and who is going to be there when the going gets real is, well, real.

This is where the all the conjecture around prehnite and intuition comes into play. Given that everyone is creating a curated online personal identity and profile, something that helps you attune to actual energy feels really necessary.

Work drama: Put it on your desk. If things get thorny politically in the office. It will not make your coworkers less annoying, but it may help you sort out who will still be trustworthy.

Evaluating friendships: In the course of our life, sometimes we outgrow friends. That is natural. Meditating with prehnite can bring clarity about which relationships have value and which are probably just stuck in habit.

Sleep aid: Keep it by your bedside. Sometimes your mind can continue to work through relationship dilemmas when you are sleeping, and prehnite has the potential to assist in that process.

Prehnite is relatively easy. It's soft compared to other crystals. So, do not use harsh cleaners (and certainly not ultrasonic jewelry cleaners). You can rinse it with water, or set it in the presence of selenite or clear quartz to cleanse.

I rinse mine, and leave it out on the full moon monthly, especially when I have used it in relation to intense relationship stimuli. It flushes out any weird energy that was obtained from previous events.

Use caution when handling as it can scratch. I wrap mine in cloth. I live in Arizona so I also keep it away from extreme heat and direct sunlight.

The Real Talk

Prehnite is not going to solve your relationship issues or provide you with any psychic powers, but it can remind you to slow down and feel whether or not someone resonates with your energy.

We impulsively rush into friendships sometimes, not properly vetting if they would be a good fit. A lot has to do with the social media age where we collect people without even having a real connection. Prehnite encourages us to pause and do a quick check in which could prevent future unnecessary drama.
